“Silicon City”
Back in January, my friend Megan and I had the privilege of attending an installation at the Long Center for Performing Arts by Architects of Art called a “Luminaria”, a “monumental inflatable structures designed to generate a sense of wonder at the beauty of light and colour.” In this unique installation, you enter into a world of color and sound. Constructed out of a special pvc material, the “Luminaria” allows 4 primary colors through and is made up of pods, influenced by Arabic architecture, that allows one to sit quietly and meditate on being engulf in a variety of hues and saturation. Inside the “Luminaria” it is at once soothing and aw inspiring. One soon forgets about time and the very existence of the outside world.
In “Silicon City” you see the outside of the “Luminaria” set against the back drop of Austin, TX, my home town. When I moved to Austin, some 20 years ago, the city was known as “The Live Music Capital of the World” throughout the 90′s as technology took hold we became known as “Silicon Hills”. Austin is a vibrant city of tech, second only to Silicon Valley with the amount of hackers, code ninja’s, start-up’s and tech industry that calls Austin home.
The city’s unofficial motto is, “Keep Austin Weird,” so it is no wonder that with our laid back lifestyle and place in the tech world that Architects of Air would choose Austin, TX to delight with such a unique artistic, immersive experience. To learn more about the “Luminaria”, and it’s various structures, please visit www.architects-of-air.com. If one of their structure comes to your city, I highly recommend visiting, you won’t be disappointed.

I took this picture, of Ruy, while we were standing on the piers at Gantry Plaza State Park. I could tell at this moment he was reflecting on the past, and thinking about the future. The river runs deep in this boy, I’ve known him since the 3rd grade, and I should know; as best friends we tell each other everything, and somethings don’t have to be said, it’s just a look, a fleeting glance, and I can tell he was both happy and sad. But no tears fell that day, of joy or sadness, for he, Chauncey, and I were at the park to play, arrested development style, it was like we were kids again.

DJ Chauncey D, the Daddy of the House of Dandridge, where our HiDef Artipixel photo column is at, was recently interviewed by Pop Icon. Check it out, and get to know the Chauncey that is, and why he’s a rather groovy fellow, and good friend.

Pop Icon Interviews Dj Chauncey D!

Pop Icon:  How did you come up with your DJ name?

Dj Chauncey D: It’s a long story but I’ll try to give you the abridged version. I was on my way to the beach with a dear friend from high school with her then girlfriend around 2001. We were taking one of my friend’s niece with us whose name was Emily…she went by Emilia Peabody…so when I introduced myself to her I blurted out “Hi I’m Chauncey”. Had no idea where I ever heard that name before or why I chose it. The following week I came up with Dandridge as my last name. Chauncey Dandridge became my alter ego when I was feeling sassy. When I started djing about a year later…using my real name seemed boring so I became DJ Chauncey D. Divine Intervention perhaps? The rest is history!

Pop Icon: How do you go about making your playlists or sets?

Dj Chauncey D: With the risk of sounding melodramatic, the mixes I make tend to just happen organically. Most of my mixes tell some kind of story and that story reflects what has been going on in my life, whether its a hard, aggressive, noisy collection of techno and breakbeat or a smooth, sexy, sultry recipe of deep house and melodic tones. I usually start with listening to a lot of tracks and finding the magic track that would make the perfect intro…I then make a playlist of about 20-25 insanely fantastic tracks and record it all live. Rarely do I start over or edit unless I make a technical blunder.

Pop Icon: What track out right now is your favorite to spin?

Dj Chauncey D: Anything by the amazing Art Department usually makes its way into my sets, but if I were to pick one track that’s turning me right now it would be Afrojack’s “Polkadots” (Oliver Twizt Remix)…it’s pure brimstone!

Pop Icon: What dj, musician or band inspired you the most?

Dj Chauncey D: Growing up I’ve had a lot of influences but the stand outs for me…cds (yes I said cds) that I would play over and over are Sunscreem’s “O2” and Cause and Effect’s “Trip”. I like the harder and industrial side of dance.

Pop Icon: What is your favourite era of music?

Dj Chauncey D: My club kid days were all about classic house and techno…the mid 90s. That shaped me as a dj but I would have to say right now is my favourite era because everything is coming back around to that musicality and sensibility just with a fresh, technologically advanced take on it.

Pop Icon: When did you get the passion to be the DJ you are right now?

Dj Chauncey D: I was always the guy at a party that was in charge of putting the music on. I was making mixed cds and chopping up songs with my dual cassette deck since the beginning. I’m a teacher deep inside and love to introduce people to new sounds, ideas, inspirations. It’s just one of the many formats to fulfil that.

Pop Icon: What would you like to see happen with your career?

Dj Chauncey D: Although I would love to be the one that gets the calls first for all the gigs out there…I never pursued my DJ career. I kind of just let things happen and if someone wanted me they would call. I often wonder what and where I would be if I applied myself. With a few parties and appearances here and there plus my weekly internet radio show on Radio Dentata I’m quite satisfied and this is probably all my busy schedule will allow for right now. I have recently become a recording artist in my own right, laying down vocals for some talented producers to turn into dance tracks. It’s a great way for my poetic side to come out filtered through my audio aesthetic.

Pop Icon:  Do you read? Has any particular book influenced you or left a life-changing impact?

Dj Chauncey D: I’m more of a writer and listener these days and haven’t really had much time to read over the years. I’ve always spent my time writing poetry and lyrics. If I do read it’s sci-fi/horror type books or stories involving major psychological drama. Since I don’t read that often, any book I read changes my life. I’m currently reading “No Sleep Till Wonderland” about a failing private investigator with narcolepsy who gets involved in a crazy situation with a speed dealer and all the people caught up in his mess set in South Philly. Yep…Jackie Collins or John Grisham ain’t my thing haha.

Pop Icon: Do you have any causes you strongly believe in?

Dj Chauncey D: That’s a loaded question. If I believe in a cause…I believe in it strongly. I believe in human rights in general from marriage equality to redefining gender roles in society. I also believe in complete artistic freedom and anti-censorship. I like to educate myself on both sides of all opinions to eventually find a way to bridge the gap and define the differences between compromise, indifference, tolerance and integrity.

Pop Icon: Are there any fears you have that you would like to get over?

Dj Chauncey D: As much as I embrace it and get intoxicated by it…I have a fear of success stil to this day. I’m left trying to figure out whether it’s the responsibility that comes with success that terrifies me because failure inspires me. I’m afraid of death but there’s really no way to get over that…certainly not my practice or anything hehe. Public speaking and reading my poetry in public is a tough one for me as well but I’m going to lance that boil by doing Stand Up for the very first time in March! Oh and I wish I liked rollercoasters more

Pop Icon: If a genie offered you three wishes what would you ask for?

Dj Chauncey D:  A full head of hair. A bigger penis. A huge Warholian type Factory in which I’m the ringleader of with a film studio, recording studio, art studio, black box theatre, dance club inside with a huge budget to run it with.

Pop Icon:  What is the best way for people to access your music and book you?

For the Boy -
The Kelpler Cascades are just a little south of Old Faithful and is easy for anyone to get to. The cascading waterfall was named in 1812 after the 12 year old son, Kepler Hoyt, of the governor at the time, John Hoyt. They had a tour of the park.
The final print is stretched over a 12x18 frame and it has a dept of 1.5”. The sides mirror that top image so none of the print is lost. The print is coated with a gloss varnish which also protects it from UV damage. The texture is created by using a UV varnish as well. The canvas is stapled to the frame on the back side creating a permanent bond to the frame. As with all of my canvas prints of flowing water or waterfalls, it is a limited edition of 25 prints. Paper prints will be available as 8x12 or smaller.
